Manueline, Renaissance, Medieval, and Classical Styles

The late 1800s design and construction of Quinta da Regaleira shows the sensitivity and intellectual pursuits of the property’s major owner, António Augusto de Carvalho Monteiro (1848–1920), as well as the skill of Italian architect and scenic designer Luigi Manini (1848-1936). An eclectic-revivalist architectural ensemble with a concentration on the Manueline, Renaissance, Medieval, and Classical styles was produced as a result of the culture and creativity of these two people.

Quinta da Regaleira

The majority of the current fifth’s construction began in 1904 and was completed in 1910. In 1949, the fifth was sold to Waldemar d’Orey, who immediately began major construction projects to accommodate his large family and extensive restoration work since the casino had not been well-maintained for a long time.

In 1988, the Japanese company Aoki Corporation purchases the Quinta da Regaleira, which ceases to be used as a residence and is turned up to the care of caseiros while remaining closed to the public.

The Câmara Municipal de Sintra purchases this priceless property in 1997, and soon after that, laborious restoration work on the building’s and the gardens’ historic properties begins.
