The Palace of Pena

This wonderful location has a long history that dates back to the 12th century, when a chapel to Our Lady of Pena was located there.

The Royal Monastery of Our Lady of Pena was built on the same site at the behest of King Manuel I and afterwards transferred to the Hieronymite Order. The monastery was virtually destroyed by the earthquake that hit Lisbon in 1755. Even though it was afflicted, the Monastery continued to function, and it wasn’t until over a century later, in 1834, after Portugal had outlawed religious orders, that it was shut down.

The Park of Pena still has remnants of this era, such as the Grotto of the Monk, where the monks went to unwind in seclusion. The Palace of Pena, which was designated as a National Monument in 1910, is the most significant location in Sintra’s Cultural Landscape, which was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995.
